Student-Athlete Responsibilities
Student-athlete attitude and behavior in-season and out-of season has an impact on the whole program, not just the individual player. Players are expected to embody the responsibilities and character of a student-athlete by making responsible decisions about their behaviors in the classroom, on the field, and in their community. Being a member of the baseball program is a privilege. All players are not only responsible for themselves, but to also be a positive representation of their school, teammates, and coaching staff. No player’s actions will be allowed to damage the reputation of each group.
Team Policy
The following actions are prohibited:
- The use of drugs, alcohol and/or tobacco
- Arguing with umpires/coaches
- Disrespecting coaches or teammates
- The throwing of equipment (personal or team)
or any other action on or off the field, the coaches deem to be detrimental to the program.
A violation of these team policies will result in the minimum of a one (1) game suspension. The suspension can be increased based on the severity of the violation. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Attendance
Off-Season
Players are encouraged to attend 100% of all baseball program workouts and activities. All student-athletes are encouraged to participate in Fall/Summer baseball team opportunities offered by the high school program, but are also allowed to participate with other baseball organizations, as well. Off-season workouts (weight training, strength, conditioning, speed, agility, etc) will be offered for student-athletes and supervised by members of the South Brunswick High School and baseball coaching staff.
In-Season
Players are expected to attend 100% of team tryout dates. There will not be alternate tryout dates for any player with the exception of injured players. Injured players will be given a few tryout sessions after they are healthy and able to play. Coaches will determine whether or not the player makes the program after the completion of the alternate tryouts.
Players are expected to attend 100% of all practices and games. Expect to have either a practice or game Monday-Saturday every week throughout the season, including days school has an early closing and/or is closed, on holidays and during spring break. Family vacations during spring break or other holidays during the season will not be excused absences.
A missed practice the day before a game will result in the player not starting the next game. Whether or not the player gets in the game will be a coach’s decision based on the situation and reason for the absence.
A player attending practice, even if they cannot participate because of illness, injury, or some other reason, is considered in attendance and will be allowed to start the following game.
Excused Absences
Players participating in Fall or Winter SBHS athletic teams are excused from baseball program activities during their other sport’s season.
Other than players participating in another SBHS sports team, Coach Sweeney must approve all absences prior to the date of the activity. If absence is not approved prior to the date of the activity, the player will be considered absent.
Grades
There are two policies that the players must abide to; the team policy and the school eligibility policy.
Team Policy
All players must meet the requirement of the School Eligibility Policy (See below). The head coach will determine the severity of the disciplinary action based on the grade earned, the reason for the grade, the number of offenses and other circumstances surrounding the individual. Disciplinary action could range from grade checks to progress reports to suspension from team.
School Eligibility Policy
Candidates for all teams must meet the academic standards established by the Board of Education and the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association.
Board of Education Policy – Grades 9-12

2. Students in grades 9-12 who do not meet these requirements for one quarter will be warned and permitted to participate on a probationary basis during the next quarter. If they do not meet the requirements by the end of the following quarter, they will be prohibited from participating in all activities. They will be reinstated following the quarter in which they meet the criteria.
3. Final grades for the year for all students will determine eligibility for the first quarter of the following school year. Deficiencies may be made up in summer school.
