VIKINGS COME UP SHORT IN SERIES FINALE VS. ST. JOE'S
In a tense and tight game, St. Joseph's Andrew Goldan walked a couple of hitters in relief against South Brunswick.
Hey, it happens, but you just got to keep going -- even with all eyes watching.
"When I'm on the mound, I feel the most comfortable," the junior said. "I feel very relaxed and none of the chatter really bothers me. ... I take a re-set. I breathe and I just make sure I go right after the next batter."
The Thursday-Saturday series featured tons of those kinds of moments, where the players and coaches had to take deep breaths, step back and keep going. Every pitch mattered between two of the top teams in Middlesex County.
St. Joseph took a pair of close games to remain atop the Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division race with Monroe. After Thursday's 3-0 win, the Falcons won 2-1 in eight innings Saturday.
St. Joseph (6-2 overall, 6-0 in division) entered No. 1 in the Home News Tribune Top 10 and South Brunswick (5-3, 4-2) was No. 2.
St. Joseph coach Mike Murray Jr. called it a typical Red Division series. "I feel like every single game we play with South Brunswick is exactly that type of game," Murray said. "These back-to-backs -- you really got to try to win two of them to try to put yourself in a position to get a leg up in the division."
South Brunswick coach CJ Hendricks noted the top pitching matchups and the feel of the games were something you'd expect to see in May and June. "Any time you're playing St. Joes, it's a playoff atmosphere, you know what I mean," Hendricks said. "But this is a good test for our guys. We got to play against a real quality program and I think this will help us down the road, seeing exactly what we need to do to improve to help us prepare for the next series coming up against East Brunswick."
On the mound, both starters sparkled in a pitching duel. St. Joes' Jimmy Mulvaney allowed a run off of three hits with no walks and nine strikeouts in six innings. South Brunswick's Frankie Sanchez matched him with one run in six innings with 11 strikeouts, allowing five hits and three walks. Goldan finished with two shutout innings in relief and ripped the walk-off hit in the eighth inning by driving the first pitch over the left fielder's head.
Xavier Arana drove in the Falcons' first run with an RBI-single in the fifth to tie it 1-1. South Brunswick took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after cleanup hitter Pete Cortez singled in leadoff hitter David Rybinski, who had waked.
Murray said that Mulvaney reminds him of former Falcon Jake Hellwig, who graduated in 2019 and won 20 games.
The sophomore sports a side-arm delivery with a good sinker and slider, while throwing strikes.
In the sixth inning, South Brunswick put runners on first and second after a hit batter and a Cortez single. Mulvaney struck out the next two hitters to get out of the inning. In the seventh and eighth, it was Goldan's turn to get out of trouble. With two on in the sixth, the right-hander got a strikeout to end the inning. He also walked a runner with one out in the seventh, but induced a ground out and got a strikeout to get out unscathed. In the bottom of the eighth, Gialluisi -- who threw out a runner trying to steal in the second -- reached on a pop up to third base that fell in for a hit with one out.
After a flyout, Carvelli was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. On the next pitch, Goldan walloped a shot to left field that scored the winning run. He said his mindset has been to be aggressive and look for a first-pitch fastball.
"I get just so much joy out of playing close, competitive games like this," Goldan said. "It's just so enlightening to be able to be a part of this program. Everything's starting to come together as a team. We are a young team. We only have a couple seniors, but I feel like they lead by a good example and I feel like we're all starting to come together and have good camaraderie as a team."
Saturday, the Falcons started five sophomores in the field -- Arana (2B), Christian Azcona (2B), Mark Gialluisi (C), Robbie Carvelli (CF), Tyler Delvecchio (1B) -- and the sophomore Mulvaney on the mound.
They also put out one senior in Colin Leyner (3B) and two juniors in Josiah Brown (SS) and Goldan (DH).
"I think as a young team you're going to learn a lot about yourself every series and I was proud about how we competed," Murray said. "Some things didn't go our way -- we made some baseball running errors, we weren't getting big hits -- but you just keep grinding it out and eventually something good's going to happen if you do that."
South Brunswick, too, has been making strides. The Vikings' only other loss was to Cranford, one of the top teams in the state.
They flashed good things in the series that should help them going forward. For one, senior catcher Joey Chegus threw out three runners trying to steal on Saturday.
"Joey did a great job today," Hendricks said. "Being able to manage two pitchers of the caliber of Frankie and Joey Tuttoilmondo is tough as it is. So his ability to kind of work behind the plate and do a good job keeping runners honest has been a really big help for us."
Another positive was the strong pitching of Tuttoilmondo in Thursday's game and Sanchez on Saturday.
"Frankie is just a baseball player," Hendricks said. "He's not a kid who plays baseball, he is a baseball player and he's just a kid who shows up on game day and he's ready to compete. He comes in with the confidence and the swagger that you need from a starting pitcher. He's not only a phenomenal guy off the mound, he's a big leader for us at the plate, out in the field. So we're just fortunate to have a kid of his style and his caliber with our ball club this year."
This series, though, belonged to St. Joseph. It's possible the teams could meet again when the GMC Tournament starts May 22.
"St. Joes is always a competitive team," Hendricks said. "I mean, they're one of the top in the area for a reason. Mike does a tremendous job with his club. He has them prepared and they don't make many mistakes. That's why they're as good as they are. I always say, the team that makes the least amount of mistakes in the game is usually the team that ends up winning and they capitalized on mistakes that we made today."

VIKINGS DROP TOUGH PITCHER'S DUEL VS. ST. JOE'S
It's great when the table setters and the big guys blast in the heart of the order. But it's baseball, and the unheralded guys are often needed in big spots.
Thursday, St. Joseph got a gem from senior Colin Leyner and the bottom of the order came through in a key Red Division win over South Brunswick in a 1 vs. 2 matchup.
The Falcons (4-2 overall, 4-0 in Red) entered No. 1 in the Home News Tribune Top 10 and South Brunswick (5-2, 4-1) was No. 2.
No. 8 hitter Andrew Goldan slugged a home run in the top of the third to break a scoreless tie. In the sixth, No. 7 hitter Tyler Delvecchio had an RBI-single and Will Ramsey added an RBI-single while pinch-hitting in the ninth spot.
"We were able to get a little production out of the bottom of the order," St. Joseph coach Mike Murray Jr. said. "I think that's the nice thing about our lineup. We have a lot of young hitters. We're still kind of coming together as a lineup, but any one of our one through nine guys can put together a tough at-bat."
Leyner did his job on the mound. The veteran right-hander struck out 12 in going the distance and allowed four hits and one walk.
"Colin's not an overpowering fastball guy, but he does a really good job changing locations," Murray said. "He can throw his breaking ball and cutter at any count. Mark Gialluisi, our catcher, does a really good job. They were working together calling pitches. He just throws a ton of strikes. I think he had a few more strikeouts than he normally does today, but pitches to contact. Pitches efficiently."
If needed, the Falcons would have turned to Goldan out of the bullpen. Turns out he wasn't needed, but he contributed in other ways in his first start at third base.
"We were planning on getting him on the mound," Murray said, "and I kind of said, like 'Sorry you didn't get on the mound today, but at least you hit a homer.'" Yes, they'll certainly take that. Saturday, South Brunswick travels to St. Joseph for a noon game to complete the series. There's a long way to go, but give the Falcons an early edge.
"CJ (Hendricks) coaches his guys up," Murray said. "They're always very good. It's the first 10 days, 12 days of the season, but we very much understand that our next few Red Division series are going to go a long way in determining the division champions. So we just wanted to go play a good game."

TUTTOILMONDO HURLS NO-HITTER IN OPENING DAY WIN OVER JP STEVENS
South Brunswick 7, J.P. Stevens 0You could just tell that Joey Tuttoilmondo was giddy for opening day.
"He's been bouncing around a lot all week," South Brunswick coach C.J. Hendricks said. "I think everybody's been kind of champing at the bit just to get out there and play some regular season baseball."
Tuttoilmondo sure made the Vikings first game since 2019 one to remember. The junior right-hander threw a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts and two walks as South Brunswick beat J.P. Stevens 7-0 in a Red Division game.
The 2020 spring season was canceled at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Offensively, Pete Cortez hit a solo home run to left center in the second inning and finished 2-for-2 with three runs scored and had a walk. Hendricks was pleased that the lefty Cortez went opposite field with his blast.
Nolan Watlington drove in three runs, including a two-RBI single and Alex Ciccone was 2-for-4. Additionally, Charlie Soriano was 2-for-3 and scored a run, while Logan Blevins and Joey Chegus each scored runs.
The Vikings had some questions entering the season with a talented, but inexperienced team. Tuttoilmondo was the only player with varsity experience back from South Brunswick's 18-win squad in 2019 that reached the GMC Tournament final.
"So he's kind of taken that leadership role as the guy who knows how we do things here," Hendricks said. "We talk a lot about culture in our program and he's gone about his business. Done things the right way. Prepared, worked hard through the offseason, I was excited all that hard work came to fruition today. He walks and talks the role. He looks the part and that's really all you want when you have a team that doesn't have a lot of varsity experience."
Monday, Tuttoilmondo's pitching talent sure looked good, mixing in his pitches and keeping the Hawks off-balanced.
"He just came out with some great stuff," Hendrick said. "I mean he's placing his fastball well. He's able to throw his curveball for a strike. He just had this like different kind of aura about him today. Call it opening day, call it whatever it was. He was excited to be back playing high school baseball. It was fun to watch him. He was just locked in.
"... He never really seemed fazed or rattled throughout the course of the game. Even when we had a couple blips of adversity where he would walk a guy or we had an error in the field, he just kind of got the ball and went about his business and did what he came to do. So it was good to see his level of maturity from the time I had him as a freshman up until now. You know, things don't faze him as much when he's struggling a little bit. He knows how to make those kind of pitch-to-pitch adjustments without me having to even say anything, which is great. He worked really well with (catcher) Joey Chegus. They were just locked in throughout the day. The defense played well whenever they had the opportunity to play, which was good to see. "

MESSAGES FROM COACHING STAFF TO PROGRAM
TEAM First, TEAM Last, TEAM Always!
2020 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: JAY CHADDAH (CO-CAPTAIN)
Coach Buttitta to Jay Chaddah:
I have been coaching high school baseball for 10 years and haven’t had a better defensive catcher than I know you. You are excellent behind the plate and have a fantastic arm. It’ a shame we didn’t have a chance this year to watch you play. I wish you the best going forward.

Coach Sweeney reflects on Jay Chaddah:
Jay is a player whose potential is off the charts. Offensively, he has speed that is rarely seen by catchers at the high school level. Defensively, he is second to none. I have no doubt in my mind he would have been the best all-around catcher in Middlesex County this season. The only thing that outshines him on the field is his ability to relate to his teammates off the field. He is the type of player every coach wants on their team.

2020 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: TEJ RAMAIAH
Coach Buttitta to Tej Ramaiah:
You were our ace last year at JV and I expected a lot from you this season. I wish that could have happened because you would have done well. I enjoyed being you coach last year and getting to know you. My only regret is that I wanted to see you at 1B more because you did well there. I hope to see you before you go off to college but if I don’t, Good Luck!

Tej is a coach’s dream. He works hard every day in practice. He gives everything he has in every game. He takes instruction from coaches and puts it into action. Tej is the type of pitcher winning programs need. His competitive spirit and determination to be great have allowed him to be a successful pitcher in the Viking Baseball program. The example he has set for the younger pitchers in our program will go a long way to allowing us to continue to be a premier baseball program in Middlesex County.

2020 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: MATTHEW SIVA- HARRISON
Coach Buttitta to Matthew Siva-Harrison:
You became my assistant coach when we had our JV games for Crossroads Football. You showed how skilled you were as a player and your knowledge of the game. I had confidence that you could make play calls and defensive shifts on your own. That takes an outstanding knowledge of the game. I watched some of those same skills coming out in baseball. It’s tough losing your senior year, but carry your skills into your future. Good luck in your future endeavors.

Coach Sweeney reflects on Matthew Siva-Harrison:
Matt is a gritty player with tremendous natural talent. It was not unusual to see Matt using his speed to run down balls in the gap on a daily basis. What should have been doubles in the gap would turn into routine fly balls with Matt patrolling right field. His speed and athleticism were unmatched in our program. He will surely be missed in the Vikings Baseball tradition of great defensive outfielders.

2020 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: MATT STORCH (CO-CAPTAIN)
Coach Buttitta to Matt Storch:
It was great getting to know you last year with the varsity team. You fit in well with Sean, Kyle, Cross, Chico, Jordy, and the rest of our team. You always seemed to remain focused on the game. You played a good 3B and I saw that even more during a few of the summer workouts. I wish we had this season together but I know that you will do very well next year and beyond.

Matt is one of the hardest-working players I have had the pleasure to coach in my 20-year coaching career. He is a hard worker who has made himself into an excellent baseball player. He is a player who leads by example. Matt does not need to scream and yell to get the attention of his peers. He simply goes to work every day and never takes a day off. When Matt is on the field he gives 100% each and every rep. Players like Matt are what make successful programs.

2020 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: GIO DELUCA
Coach Buttitta to Gio DeLuca:
I was looking forward to our baseball discussions this year like we used to have when I met you at Joe’s Restaurant. I know it’s disappointing to miss the season this year but you have your entire future ahead of you. I hope to continue to see you at the restaurant and have many future Red Sox/Yankee discussions.

Coach Sweeney reflects on Gio DeLuca:
The first word that comes to mind when I think about Gio is PASSION. Gio has a passion for life and a passion for baseball. Gio brings an energy to practice that is unmatched in our program. He is dedicated to excellence and brings the same commitment out of his teammates. Every team needs a player like Gio to keep them up when they are down and to keep the energy in the dugout high.

2020 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: ANDREW VON BARGEN
Coach Buttitta to Andrew von Bargen:
I looked forward to watch you play this year and I’m sorry that didn’t happen. You would have been one of team’s leaders and you were ready to perform at a high level. Don’t be disappointed but channel that energy to your future goals. Good Luck!

Coach Sweeney reflects on Andrew von Bargen:
Drew is the epitome of determination. When he sets a goal for himself, he does not stop until he reaches it. Drew is an outstanding example for all the players in our program. His hard work and drive to be great are traits a coach wishes every player in their program would have. In order to be a successful baseball program, you need players with Drew’s perseverance and ability on the roster.

2020 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: KYLE FISHER
Coach Buttitta to Kyle Fisher:
Fishman, I had a great experience last year being your coach. Your skills at 1B were obviously above average and your bat carried us down the stretch. You were one of the most respected players by your teammates that I ever coached. It was a pleasure to get to know you as a player and as a person. Sorry that you lost this season. Good luck in college in the fall.

Coach Sweeney reflects on Kyle Fisher:
Kyle is a defensive wizard at first base. He moves around the first base bag with confidence and ease. Kyle makes his infield mates better with his ability to make difficult plays looks easy. He also brings a joy of the game and an energy to the dugout that every successful team needs to be great. Kyle is a “we before me” type of player who will do whatever it takes to help his team be successful.

2020 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: KYLE GRUVER
Coach Buttitta to Kyle Gruver:
It was great to have an opportunity to be your coach again. You were a dedicated player, a leader, and a great teammate on the Crossroads Football Team. I know that this year you would have been an outstanding team leader for all of your team this year. Even though our season was cut short, I hope that you utilize those leadership qualities in life. People respect you and what you have to offer them. Good Luck!

Coach Sweeney reflects on Kyle Gruver:
Kyle can be described in two words: Raw talent. Kyle has the ability to make an extremely hard game look easy. He is one of the most naturally talented players in our program. He has also shown the uncanny ability to adapt and be versatile. Last season he was asked to play the outfield in order to help the team. He responded with “yes coach” and went on to become an excellent defensive outfielder. The transition from SS to CF is not an easy one. However, Kyle worked hard at his craft and became an excellent outfielder in a very short time. His versatility on the baseball field is a great asset for any team.

2020 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: DOM SERVEDIO
Coach Buttitta message to Dom Servedio:
Dom, I was looking forward to watching you play at the varsity level this year. You played at second base last year was well above average. You hit for us all season and wanted to see you do the same this season. I appreciated how you understood and helped me get players into the game. It was a pleasure to have such a player on my team. I wish you all the best in the future.

Dom is one of the most dedicated and hard-working players this program has seen in several years. He is always willing to do whatever his coaches ask of him and he never complains. If he is asked to play second base, he goes out and plays the best second base he can. If he is asked to play the outfield, he gives you everything he has in out there. Dom is a “team-first” player and an outstanding example of what it means to be part of a program. Players like Dom make an entire program better through his work ethic and dedication to the team.

2020 SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: ALEX STRANGE (CO-CAPTAIN)
Coach Buttitta message to Alex Strange:
Alex, I’m sorry that your senior season was cut short. You had good plate discipline last year and I expected I really great season this year at the plate and in the field. I hope that you do well in whatever path you choose for your future.

Quiet confidence. A man of few words, but a leader by example. Alex is a student-athlete who had the ability to lead his teammates without having to say a word. His work ethic and dedication to the team was unmatched. He is a coach’s dream. He is a player willing to do whatever is asked of him in order to help his team be great. Alex never put personal wants ahead of the team. His attitude and leadership have helped our younger players understand what it means to be part of the Viking Baseball family.

VIKINGS LOSE NJSIAA OPENER VS. RAIDERS
North Brunswick 3, South Brunswick 1: The Raiders scored twice in the first inning and Michael Scimone made both runs stand up with a complete-game gem as ninth-seeded North Brunswick edged the eighth-seeded Vikings in a Central Group IV first-round game.
North Brunswick (18-9) advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinals, where it will face top-seeded Hunterdon Central.
Scimone allowed one earned run on three hits and three walks. He fanned four in a 104-pitch effort. South Brunswick (13-12) spoiled his shutout bid in the sixth when Mike Reyes delivered the Vikings’ lone run with an RBI double.
Andrew Tan’s two-run single in the first gave the Raiders their 2-0 lead. Tan, who finished 2-for-3, was the lone player on either team to record a multiple-hit game. Tan has 37 RBI and 31 hits on the season.
Caleb Rodriguez and Christian Petrillo each singled and scored in the opening frame for the Raiders.
Sean Breheney crossed with North Brunswick’s other run in the second inning on Dylan Glassman’s sacrifice fly.
According to Raiders' play-by-play announcer Korbid Thompson, the 18 wins for North Brunswick are the program's most since 1984, the last year the team won a sectional title.
Hard-luck losing pitcher Jacob Ciccone allowed no earned runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out five and was lifted after throwing 108 pitches through six innings.
Owner of a deceptive 4-4 record with a 0.56 ERA, South Brunswick has scored a total of three runs in Ciccone’s four losses.

VIKINGS FINISH 2ND IN RED DIVISION WITH WIN OVER ST. JOE'S
South Brunswick 6, St. Joseph 5: Mike Slover went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI as the Vikings played the role of spoiler, ruining St. Joseph’s chance at staking a claim to a division crown.
With East Brunswick falling to Monroe earlier in the day, St. Joseph could have shared the Red Division championship with the Bears by defeating the Vikings, but today’s loss assures the Falcons of a second-place finish in the division.
Winning pitcher Justin Cross allowed four runs (one earned) on eight hits over five innings. He struck out five and walked one.
Marcus James allowed one earned run over the final two frames for a save.
South Brunswick scored three runs in the third to erase a 2-1 deficit. After St. Joseph responded with a run in the top of the fourth to make the score 4-3, the Vikings answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, rebuilding their advantage to 6-3.
The Falcons (11-11) closed out the scoring with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to produce the final margin.
Felix Quinones had a hit and scored a run for South Brunswick (12-9). Teammate Nic DeLaCruz went 1-for-4 and scored twice. Jacob Ciccone contributed a hit and an RBI to the win.

VIKINGS DROP CROSSTOWN RIVALRY GAME VS. RAIDERS
North Brunswick 11, South Brunswick 6: Danny Reardon and Damian Ortiz clubbed back-to-back homers, highlighting a six-run rally in the fourth inning that propelled the Raiders to a crossover victory.

Kelson Hopson clubbed a three-run homer, his team-leading fourth of the season, that gave the Raiders an insurmountable 10-4 lead in the fifth inning.
Dylan Glassman, Christian Petrillo and Andrew Tan also had two hits apiece for North Brunswick (13-5). Michael Scimone and Petrillo each doubled.
The victory, North Brunswick’s fifth straight and its seventh in the last eight games, will likely help the Raiders when it comes time for them to be seeded for the conference tournament, which will be seeded at Monroe High School on Tuesday morning.
Kyle White homered and doubled for South Brunswick (11-8), which dropped its second straight. Teammate Nick Delacruz went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Mike D’Amato was the only other Viking to register a hit.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SUMMER FOR SOUTH BRUNSWICK 17U TEAM
This Summer, the SBHS 17U baseball team was well represented in the Greater MIddlesex Coaches Summer Baseball League (GMCSBL). The team finished their regular season schedule as Co-Division Champions (along with Woodbridge HS) and compiled an overall record of 11-4. The team was led by strong efforts by the pitching staff, solid defensive performances, and timely hitting in key spots throughout the course of the season. The 17U team was well-coached by two SBHS Baseball Alumni and former 17U players: Danny Strickland ('12) & Nick Veglia ('13). Both coaches worked diligently to provide our players with good instruction, a positive atmosphere to develop, and a competitive baseball experience. I hope that all the 17U players had a good experience and enjoyed the opportunity to represent South Brunswick baseball in this year's GMCSBL. Have a safe and enjoyable summer! Back to work in September.
